Coaching system for equestrians: 10 questions to ask before you buy

We’ve been selling equestrian intercoms since 2023, and our customers tend to ask us the same things before they buy. We’ve gathered them all in one place. For each question, we explain why it matters and what to look for, whichever system you end up choosing.

1. Can both people talk at the same time?

This is the most important difference between intercoms, and the one most often overlooked. The simplest systems are one-way: the trainer talks and the rider only listens. Half-duplex models allow two-way communication, but only one person at a time, like a walkie-talkie. Full duplex means a normal conversation, where both people can speak and hear each other at the same moment. If you want the rider to be able to reply straight away or ask something mid-exercise, look for full duplex. That’s how eQuestConnect works.

2. How much range do you really need?

The diagonal of a 20 × 40 m arena is about 45 m, and of a 20 × 60 m arena about 63 m, so a standard arena doesn’t need much range. More range comes in handy in large outdoor arenas, in the field or out hacking. Keep in mind that range is quoted for open terrain, and indoor walls, buildings and trees all reduce it. eQuestConnect has a range of up to 800 m in open terrain, which leaves plenty of margin for both outdoor and indoor arenas.

3. How long does the battery last?

A single lesson usually lasts 45–60 minutes, but an instructor teaching several lessons a day needs equipment that lasts the whole day. It’s also worth checking how it charges, because a universal USB-C port means you don’t have to keep track of a dedicated charger. eQuestConnect has a stated battery life of up to 24 hours of talk time, and a full charge via USB-C takes about 2.5 hours.

4. Is an intercom worth it for a leisure rider?

Intercoms are often associated with competition riders and professional trainers, but the people who gain the most from them are those who ride with an instructor once or twice a week. In a large arena, in the wind, or in an indoor school where several people are working at once, some of the instructions simply don’t reach the rider, and every correction you miss is part of a lesson you’ve paid for. When your instructor can speak in a normal voice and you can answer or ask a question straight away, you get more out of every ride.

5. One earpiece or two?

Earpieces in both ears cut you off from your surroundings, and a rider needs to hear the horse, other riders and what’s going on in the arena. That’s why a single earpiece works better for riding. It should sit securely in the ear, and the cable should clip to your clothing. With eQuestConnect, the rider uses a single earpiece with a microphone, and spare earpieces are available separately.

6. How does it cope with stable conditions?

Arena dust, rain and damp are part of everyday life around horses. Check exactly what the seller claims: “splash-resistant” is not the same as “waterproof”. If an IP rating is given, that’s the most reliable information. The eQuestConnect housing is splash- and moisture-resistant, so riding in the rain is not a problem, but the unit should not be rinsed under running water or submerged.

7. How many people can be connected at once?

For private lessons, a two-person set is all you need. If you teach group lessons, check how many riders the trainer’s unit can handle and how it switches between them. It also matters whether several sets can work side by side when more than one instructor is teaching in the same indoor arena. With eQuestConnect you can connect up to 7 units in one group, meaning the trainer and six riders, and several sets work side by side without interfering with each other. If you’re planning group lessons from the start, take a look at our intercom set for groups of riders.

8. How much does a good set cost, and what should be in the box?

Trainer-and-rider sets currently cost from around EUR 250 to over EUR 700. When comparing prices, check exactly what you get: how many units, whether earpieces are included, and whether charging cables and a user manual come in the box. The eQuestConnect set costs 250 EUR and includes two identical intercoms, two earpieces with microphones, charging cables and a user manual.

9. Will intercoms from different brands work together?

Usually not. Equestrian intercoms work within a single system, so if your yard or training group is planning several sets, it’s best to choose one system for everyone. With eQuestConnect, additional units can be bought separately and added to your existing group.

Who handles the warranty and any claims?

For equipment you buy to last for years, this matters more than it might seem. Check how long the warranty is and who handles it: the seller you bought from, or a third party you have to ship the unit off to. eQuestConnect comes with a 24-month warranty, we handle all claims ourselves, and a faulty unit is replaced with a new one. If the set doesn’t suit your lessons, you have 14 days to return it.
